The Charterhouse, founded in 1366 thanks to the economic support of illustrious Pisan families, rises among the olive trees of Valgraziosa, rather isolated from the settelment of Calci from which there is about 1 Km. The convent is accessed by two avenues with a suggestive pedestrian path from which you can enjoy the prospective view of the double facade of the monumental complex. The most exterior, low, was destined for functions to which the inhabitants of the area could access: the pharmacy, the San Sebastiano’s chapel also said the women’s chapel, the parlor, and, separate from the courthouse whit its large green lawn, the façade of the real monastery in whose center it’s possibile to admire the spectacular façade of the church, covered in white marble, with a double ramp staircase and the tympanum with the statue of the Assumption among angels.
The monastery, cloistered monastery of St. Bruno’s Carthusian Order , was abolished during Napoleonic era before and Savoy then, but it was again inhabited by the monks until 1969, when they abandoned it definitively.
In the Charterhouse are open to the public the spaces devoted to the hermitic life, the large cloister along whose arms are arranged the 15 cells of the monks, one of which is open to the visit, the church and the chapels and the rooms where it was performed the Cenobitic life, as the refectory and the Chapter.
In the sacristy is exposed the Atlantic Bible, an extraordinary 12th century miniature code in four volumes; the visit ends with the granducal guesthouse, the cloister of the guesthouses, the painting’s galleries and the long corridors enriched by refined frescoes decorations.
The Charterhouse hosts the Natural History Museum of Pisa’s University, set up mainly in the monastery service areas: the magnificent barn, about 100 meters long, the oil mill, the laundries and the courtyards for agricultural activities.
